{"id":1938,"date":"2025-09-03T10:16:59","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T07:16:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/turaida-muzejs.lv\/en\/?p=1938"},"modified":"2025-09-03T10:18:32","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T07:18:32","slug":"the-traditional-oak-day-in-turaida","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/turaida-muzejs.lv\/en\/blog\/2025\/09\/03\/the-traditional-oak-day-in-turaida\/","title":{"rendered":"The traditional OAK DAY in Turaida"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On Saturday, 6<sup>th<\/sup> of September from 12:00 until 18:00 the traditional OAK DAY will take place at the Turaida Museum Reserve, as well as the opening of the new permanent interactive exhibition \u201cNature\u2019s Treasures\u201d in the Turaida Forest Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program is designed to be interesting for both adults and children and is especially suitable for families with kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>12:00 <\/strong>Opening of the artist Anita Paegle&#8217;s illustration exhibition <em>\u201cThe Mosquito Fell from the Oak\u201d<\/em> at the Turaida Museum Reserve&#8217;s smithy building. The children&#8217;s vocal group <strong>Siguldi\u0146a<\/strong> will perform. This exhibition is also part of the <strong>Sigulda Children\u2019s and Youth Literature Festival<\/strong> program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>13:00<\/strong> Opening of the new permanent interactive exhibition <em>\u201cNature\u2019s treasures\u201d<\/em> in the Turaida Forest Park. <strong>Didzis Jaunzems Architecture Design<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From <strong>13:00<\/strong> Creative, educational, and entertaining activities for children and adults at the <em>Under-the-Oak Stops<\/em>, where invited researchers, craftsmen, and museum reserve staff will share their experience and knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>UNDER-THE-OAK STOPS:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Nature Class<\/strong> \u2013 Discover the value of nature in a fun and engaging way with nature education games in the mobile classroom, led by Nature Education Specialist Anda Andru\u0161aite from the Nature Conservation Agency and Zanda Segli\u0146a, assistant coordinator of the LIFE Osmo Baltic project;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>STEM (an educational field based on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics)<\/strong> \u2013 Nature workshop;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Scents of Nature<\/strong> \u2013 A meeting with dendrologist and long-time Director of the National Botanical Garden <strong>Andrejs Svil\u0101ns<\/strong>, sharing stories about Latvia\u2019s rich dendrological heritage;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Hermit Beetle<\/strong> \u2013 A meeting with entomologist <strong>Voldem\u0101rs Spu\u0146\u0123is<\/strong>, PhD in biology, insect researcher, and expert in the world of tiny creatures \u2013 also known as a wasp, grasshopper, and fly tamer \u2013 along with <strong>Maksims Balalaikins<\/strong>, PhD in biology and leading researcher at the Institute of Life Sciences and Technologies of Daugavpils University.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Secrets of Ponds<\/strong> \u2013 Dive into the underwater and above-water world with researchers from the Hydrobiology Laboratory of the Institute of Biology at the University of Latvia, led by <strong>D\u0101vis Ozoli\u0146\u0161<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Birds<\/strong> \u2013 Conversations about and around birds with <strong>Viesturs \u0136erus<\/strong>, Chairman of the Board of the Latvian Ornithological Society;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Photos under an Oak<\/strong> \u2013 A masterclass and exhibition by renowned Latvian nature photographer <strong>Andris Egl\u012btis<\/strong> in the forest park;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Oak of Songs<\/strong> \u2013 Honoring the oak through songs, games, and dances with folklorist and musician <strong>Aiga Auzi\u0146a<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Power of Forest for Health<\/strong> \u2013 A meeting with sauna master and herbalist <strong>Inta Brikmane<\/strong>, featuring a tea tasting;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Oak Wool<\/strong> \u2013 Demonstrations by textile artist <strong>Ritvars To\u010ds<\/strong> on extracting and processing wool from trees, shrubs, and plants. Opportunity to taste acorn coffee and purchase woolen products made from trees;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bee Embassy<\/strong> \u2013 A meeting with <strong>Ain\u0101rs Mitrofanovs<\/strong>, Chairman of the Board of the Beekeeping Cooperative Union \u201cSigulda Honey,\u201d and beekeepers from the &#8220;Bee Friend&#8221; project, with candle-making, beekeeping product tasting, and purchasing;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Bee House<\/strong> \u2013 Introduction to beehive therapy and a short walk to the bee houses created by <strong>Montas Voldi\u0146a<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Wooden Spoon Workshop<\/strong> \u2013 Demonstrations by craftsman <strong>Juris Ren\u010ds<\/strong>, with the opportunity to purchase apple and plum wood spoons and spatulas;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Oak Charcoal<\/strong> \u2013 Drawing with charcoal and creating an exhibition of drawings together with Turaida Museum Reserve specialist <strong>Daiga K\u013cavi\u0146a<\/strong>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Crow Sit<\/strong><strong>ting<\/strong><strong> in the Oak<\/strong> \u2013 Crafting birds from natural materials under the guidance of <strong>Margita Poriete<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Little Acorn<\/strong> \u2013 Making jewelry and toys from natural materials together with preschool educator <strong>Lauma Bogu\u013cko<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mauri\u0146i Delights<\/strong> \u2013 Tasting treats from the hosts of the guesthouse <strong>\u201cMauri\u0146i\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>&#8220;Drabe\u0161u Manor Musicians&#8221;<\/strong> will fill the forest park with older and lesser-known songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s special addition, the <em>&#8220;Nature\u2019s treasures&#8221;<\/em> exhibition, has been created with financial support from the <strong>Interreg Estonia-Latvia Programme 2021-2027<\/strong>, under the European Territorial Cooperation Goal, through the <strong>\u201cGarden Pearls II\u201d<\/strong> project. The exhibition\u2019s design was crafted by <strong>Didzis Jaunzems Architecture<\/strong>, skillfully creating interactive objects for nature exploration, especially for families with children. Visitors will be able to explore a real insect hotel, measure towering trees, and learn about the mysterious life of the hermit beetle in the Turaida Forest Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the fourth year, the <strong>Turaida Museum Reserve<\/strong> will celebrate <strong>OAK DAY<\/strong>, offering educational workshops under the unique title <strong>&#8220;Under-the-Oak Stops&#8221;<\/strong>. This year, at sixteen stops, both adults and children can spend many hours enjoying useful activities. These workshops will be led by experienced researchers and experts \u2013 including a dendrologist, entomologist, habitat expert, hydrobiologist, ornithologist, sauna master, folklorist, nature photographer, beekeeper, cook, and artist. In collaboration with the <strong>Nature Conservation Agency<\/strong>, there will be a <strong>Mobile Nature Education Class<\/strong>. For the first time, a <strong>STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)<\/strong> nature workshop will be held, focusing on the education of these subjects. Starting from the 2025\/2026 school year, the Turaida Museum Reserve will offer educational activities in nature studies for primary and secondary school students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In collaboration with the <strong>Sigulda Children\u2019s and Youth Literature Festival<\/strong>, an illustration exhibition by artist <strong>Anita Paegle<\/strong>, titled <em>\u201cThe Mosquito Fell from the Oak\u201d<\/em>, will be opened in the smithy building.
