The circular path around the stone castle offers a look at the more interesting elements of the construction of a Medieval castle.&nbsp; The trail is named after J\u0101nis Graudonis, who spent more than 25 years in conducting archaeological work at the castle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-contrast-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8516eea34d45747e122199458401bf29\">The location of the oldest drawbridge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>T<\/em>he drawbridge replaced a protective moat for a wooden Liv castle in the 14<sup>th<\/sup> century.&nbsp; The western wall of the passage into the castle had to be strengthened with additional stone and counterforce elements to deal with the weight of the bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-contrast-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-13e3ffaeff9fa7f81660095c3f6fe4e7\">The foundations of the initial castle building<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The oldest stone residential building at the castle was built in the early 13<sup>th<\/sup> century, perhaps in 1214.&nbsp; It was 13 metres long and some 10 metres wide.&nbsp; The foundations had two openings toward the West that were typical of the first fortified homes \u2013 so-called \u201cstrong houses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-contrast-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-556bec0a9507b9b9108a1d1250abded1\">The small semi-circular tower<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The tower was built during the 15<sup>th<\/sup> century outside the western protective wall.&nbsp; It had three floors, with the upper floor used for firing weapons.&nbsp; In the late 16<sup>th<\/sup> century, it was used as a storehouse for the blacksmith\u2019s tools and coal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-contrast-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1724e5e4de02cdd048631d91adba8d05\">The tower-shaped western addition to the southern wing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Built around the 15<sup>th<\/sup> century.&nbsp; The lower room and cellar have been preserved.&nbsp; The building was heated with a warm air stove.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-contrast-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-cdc9cdd1b14e6a4cdd874e81f03c990b\">Paths to the Gauja port<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These have existed ever since the 14<sup>th<\/sup> century.&nbsp; A paved path from the yard leads through the southern forecastle and on to the Gauja.&nbsp; The initial exit was later bricked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-contrast-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5c33062f4b7da6699aa26eeb342cd60a\">Counterforce<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Eleven co<\/em>unterforce elements with different structures and of different size were installed on the eastern side of the castle hill in the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century to protect the walls of the castle.&nbsp; These structures supported and strengthened the walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-contrast-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8ddc621e2880d37f43e7f958418dd90e\">The dry loo<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The small and square building had an open bottom part covered with arches.&nbsp; It was built in the 14<sup>th<\/sup> century and was outside the eastern protective wall, where residential buildings once stood near the north-eastern corner of the castle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-contrast-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-18ce1ae5195f03b99a2aa6b11add9a4c\">A secret escape<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This was installed in the eastern wall of the residential room in the 14<sup>th<\/sup> century and allowed people to escape the castle when danger occurred.&nbsp; Two layers of brick in the external protective wall could be broken to get beyond the protective wall and into the ravine that was below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-contrast-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9617903b27103dfd7b59d9905e3be568\">The first castle chapel<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The square building was erected in the 14<sup>th<\/sup> century along the initial castle.&nbsp; In the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century it was used as a grain warehouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-contrast-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8797cffa6fd91a23dc7c48944aa1ec5a\">The northern tower, external moat and bridge, and northern gate with defensive towers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These defensive structures were built in the 15<sup>th<\/sup> century.&nbsp; The northern tower had a diameter of 12 metres from the outside.&nbsp; The interior design was rather eccentric.&nbsp; On the northern side, the wall was 4.5 metres thick, while on the other side, toward the castle, it was just 2.5 metres thick.&nbsp;
